Prepare Your Home for Summer Vacations

bluecorona

Summer has nearly arrived! The kids are out of school; the weather is warm; it’s time to use that PTO you’ve saved up for a family vacation! However, preparing for your vacation involves more than just booking the flights, packing your bags, and heading on your way. You’ll need to make sure your house is ready for your trip as well. How do you do that? We’ve prepared this checklist for you to follow to make sure your home is ready for your summer vacation.

Adjust the thermostat.

While your away on your vacay, there’s no need to keep the house cool and comfortable; instead, we recommend bumping the thermostat up to about 80 degrees. This will save you money on your energy bill and make your home more efficient, all without killing any of your houseplants.

Unplug small appliances.

Your appliances like the coffee maker, toaster, electric can opener don’t need to be ready and waiting for you on the counter while you’re on your trip. Instead, unplug all of these energy vampires so that they don’t waste pointless electricity while you’re far from home.

Turn water heater to vacation mode.

There’s no need to keep an entire tank full of water hot and ready for a shower if no one’s there to take one. Most water heaters have a vacation setting that you can turn it to. This will ensure that your system is not continually heating the water while you’re away from home.

Turn the water supply off.

We recommend turning the water supply to your home off, especially if you’re going to be gone for a long vacation. This will help to prevent any burst pipes or other major plumbing problems.
